Could mold in my cupboard be causing kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night for the past couple of weeks and I'm worried sick. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of them covered in fuzzy black spots. With all the humidity lately, I'm terrified it's mold and that it's spreading. Could this be the cause of their coughs and how much would it cost to get a professional to properly clean and treat the whole cupboard?

Based on your description, that is almost certainly mold growth, and yes, it is a very likely cause of the persistent nighttime coughing in your children. Mold releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are potent irritants and allergens, especially for young, developing respiratory systems. The confined space under the stairs in a humid climate like Jumeirah creates a perfect incubator for mold, particularly on organic materials like cotton and wool in stored clothing.

The cost to professionally address this is not a single flat fee. It involves a two-step process: inspection/testing and then remediation. A professional inspection, which includes air quality tests and surface sampling to identify the mold type and spore concentration, typically starts from AED 1,000 - 1,500 for a targeted area like a cupboard. This is crucial to understand the severity.

The remediation cost depends entirely on the inspection findings. For a contained area, a proper hygienization treatment—which involves isolating the area, using HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial fogging, and applying protective coatings—could range from AED 2,500 to AED 4,500+. This is not a simple wipe-down; it's a scientific process to ensure complete spore eradication and prevent recurrence, which is vital for your family's health.

Given the symptoms, I strongly recommend against DIY attempts. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize the spores, making the air quality worse. You need a certified assessment immediately.
