Could the new wool carpets be causing allergy symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

My two kids have been constantly rubbing their eyes and sneezing since we got back from the desert camp in Al Qudra last weekend. My youngest has developed a rash on his arms too, and it’s only in our villa’s main living area where we laid out the new wool carpets. Could this be an allergy to the carpet dust, or something they picked up from the desert plants?

Based on your description, it's highly probable the new wool carpets are the primary source of the symptoms, rather than residual desert allergens. The timing and location specificity (only the main living area) are classic indicators of an indoor environmental trigger.
Wool is a natural fiber that can harbor several allergens. Firstly, it can be a direct irritant for some individuals. More commonly, however, the issue is not the wool itself but the dust, mites, and chemical treatments embedded within it. New carpets often release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from adhesives and backing materials, which can cause respiratory irritation, sneezing, and skin reactions like the rash you described. The high indoor humidity common in UAE villas, especially with AC systems that may not be optimally dehumidifying, creates a perfect environment for dust mites to proliferate in the new carpet. A desert excursion can certainly expose one to pollens and fine silica dust, which may have temporarily irritated their systems. However, these symptoms would likely be improving by now, not persisting or worsening specifically in one room. I strongly recommend a professional indoor environmental quality inspection. We can conduct targeted air and surface sampling to identify the specific allergen or irritant—whether it's elevated VOC levels, mite allergens, or mold spores that were introduced with the carpet. This is crucial for effective remediation, as the solution for a chemical off-gassing issue is different from a biological one. Don't let this linger; constant exposure can sensitize individuals further. For a detailed assessment, please call our team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. We'll get to the root of it. |
