Dehumidifier for moldy wardrobe in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah Park has started feeling weirdly damp, especially in the mornings. I opened it today to get a shirt and noticed a couple of my leather bags have what looks like faint white mold spots on them. I’ve never seen this before and it’s only been a problem since the weather got really humid last week. Is a dehumidifier the best solution for a small enclosed space like a wardrobe, or is there something else I should try first?

Good morning from Dubai. That damp feeling and the white mold spots you're describing on your leather goods are classic symptoms of elevated relative humidity within an enclosed space, a very common issue here in the UAE, especially during the recent high humidity periods. The wardrobe, being an enclosed, unventilated space, acts as a humidity trap.
While a small desiccant dehumidifier can provide a temporary solution, it is merely treating the symptom, not the cause. The primary issue is likely inadequate air circulation and potential temperature differentials causing condensation within the closet. Before investing in equipment, I would recommend these steps: First, thoroughly empty and clean the wardrobe with a mild detergent solution to remove the existing mold spores. For the leather, use a dedicated leather cleaner. Second, ensure there is a way for air to circulate. Leave the wardrobe doors ajar for a few hours each day and consider installing a small, battery-operated ventilation fan or even a passive ventilation grille. Keep items spaced apart, not pushed tightly together. However, the appearance of mold indicates that the humidity level has been sustained above 60% for a period of time. For a proper assessment and to rule out any underlying issues contributing to the moisture, a professional inspection is highly advised. We use specialized tools like thermal imaging and hygrometers to identify the exact source and conditions.
