Dry cough at night: ER now or wait for clinic?« Back to Previous Page

My three-year-old has been having a really bad, dry cough for the past three nights that keeps him and us awake. It’s worst in his bedroom and I’ve noticed it gets a bit better when we’re in the living room with the humidifier on. I’m worried it’s the AC or maybe something more serious, especially with all this dust lately. Should I take him to the ER tonight or is it okay to wait for a clinic appointment tomorrow morning?

Based on your description, this is a classic presentation of an indoor air quality (IAQ) related issue, highly common in Dubai. The fact that the dry cough is location-specific (worse in the bedroom, better in the humidified living room) strongly suggests an environmental trigger rather than a primary medical infection like bronchitis.

The dry, desert climate combined with constant AC use creates an environment of very low humidity, which dries out mucous membranes in the nose and throat, leading to irritation and a persistent, dry cough. This is often exacerbated by the fine, airborne dust (PM2.5 and PM10 particulates) that infiltrates our homes, especially during sandstorm events. The AC unit itself could be a contributor if its filters are clogged or if there's microbial growth (mold/bacteria) within the ductwork, which is then being circulated.

For tonight: I would not recommend the ER unless your child is showing signs of significant respiratory distress (e.g., labored breathing, wheezing, high fever). Moving him to the humidified living room to sleep is a very good temporary mitigation. Ensure he stays well-hydrated.

For tomorrow: A clinic visit is prudent to rule out any underlying medical conditions. However, for a long-term solution, you must address the root cause. The Dubai Municipality has strict guidelines on IAQ and AC maintenance for a reason. I highly recommend a professional IAQ inspection. We can test for particulate matter, VOCs, and most importantly, conduct microbial air sampling to check for biocontaminants in the AC system and the bedroom.

Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) to schedule an assessment. We can identify the specific irritants in your home and provide a targeted remediation plan, which may include duct cleaning, HEPA air purifiers, and humidity control strategies.
