Eco-friendly cleaner for black mould on villa stucco?« Back to Previous Page

The stucco on the outside wall of my villa in Al Barsha is starting to get those black mould streaks, especially near the windows. I tried just scrubbing it with water but it came back after a few weeks. I'm worried the harsh chemicals the maintenance guys usually use will just kill my plants and run off into the patio drainage. Is there a strong enough eco-friendly cleaner I can mix up myself to tackle this, or is this a job where I need to call in a specialist green cleaning service?

Good question. This is a very common issue in Al Barsha and across the UAE due to our high humidity, condensation from AC units, and dust accumulation that holds moisture.

While scrubbing with water removes the surface mould, it doesn't kill the root structure (hyphae) embedded in the porous stucco, which is why it returns so quickly. The harsh biocides often used by some maintenance crews are effective but can indeed harm your landscaping and are not environmentally responsible.

For a strong, eco-friendly DIY solution, you can mix a solution of distilled white vinegar and water at a 4:1 ratio, with a small addition of a few drops of eco-friendly dish soap to help it adhere to the vertical surface. Apply it generously with a garden sprayer, let it soak for 15-20 minutes, then scrub with a stiff bristle brush. For more stubborn growth, a paste made from baking soda and water applied after the vinegar can help with abrasion and further inhibit growth.

However, a crucial point: if the staining is widespread, recurrent, or you notice any cracking or dampness on the interior walls near the streaks, this indicates a potential moisture intrusion issue that simple cleaning won't fix. The mould on the exterior could be a symptom of a more serious problem within the wall cavity, which requires a professional inspection to assess for hidden damage and the true source of moisture.

For a guaranteed, truly eco-friendly remediation that uses professional-grade, plant-safe enzymatic cleaners and addresses the root cause to prevent recurrence, calling a specialist is the best course of action. We can assess if it's just surface growth or something more.
