Eco-friendly ways to treat mold in AC vents?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vents in our Jumeirah villa bedroom have been blowing out a faint, dusty smell for the past couple of months, and both my husband and I have had this persistent dry cough that just won't go away. We got the ducts cleaned professionally last month, but the smell came back within two weeks and the coughing is even worse now, especially at night. What's the most effective eco-friendly way to clean or treat the AC system to kill whatever mold or bacteria is in there, without using harsh chemicals?

Based on your symptoms and the quick return of the issue after a standard duct cleaning, it sounds like you’re dealing with a persistent microbial contamination, likely mold or bacteria, deep within your AC system. Standard vacuum cleaning only removes loose debris, not the biological growth itself.

For an effective, eco-friendly remediation in the UAE, we must address the high humidity that fuels the problem. First, ensure your AC unit’s drain pan and condensate drain line are completely clear; a clog here is a primary cause of microbial growth. A professional can use high-pressure jetting with hot water or steam, which is highly effective and chemical-free.

For treating the internal surfaces of the ducts and the evaporator coil, the most recommended eco-friendly method is a treatment with enzymatic cleaners. These are non-toxic, biodegradable solutions that literally digest the organic matter (the mold and bacteria) at a molecular level, preventing regrowth. This is far superior to harsh chemical biocides that can off-gas and aggravate respiratory issues.

However, given that the cough has worsened, this indicates a significant airborne contaminant load. DIY solutions are not advised. UAE regulations (UAE.S 5010:2021 Indoor Air Quality) set strict standards for airborne fungal spores. A proper inspection, including air and swab sampling, is critical to identify the specific contaminant and its source before any treatment can be correctly prescribed.

I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified team uses exactly these green remediation techniques. Please call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a thorough inspection and a targeted, health-focused solution.
