High-pitched AC whistle in afternoon: DIY fix or call tech?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom AC has started making a high-pitched whistling noise that only happens in the afternoon when it’s working its hardest. It’s driving me crazy and I can barely sleep. It’s a split unit and the noise seems to be coming from the indoor part on the wall. Is this something I can fix myself, or do I need to call a technician for a specific repair?

Good question, and a very common issue here in the UAE, especially during these peak summer afternoons. That high-pitched whistling you're hearing from the indoor unit is almost certainly related to airflow restriction.

When the unit is working its hardest, the refrigerant pressure is at its highest. A whistling noise is typically caused by that pressurized refrigerant forcing its way through a small orifice or a blockage. The most common culprits are a severely clogged air filter, blocked evaporator coils from dust buildup (a huge problem with Dubai's sand and construction dust), or, more technically, a malfunctioning expansion valve that's not metering the refrigerant flow correctly.

Here’s what you can check yourself: First, power off the unit completely at the thermostat and circuit breaker for safety. Remove and inspect the air filter. If it's clogged with dust, give it a thorough cleaning. If that doesn't resolve it, the issue is likely deeper inside the unit—either the evaporator coils are filthy or there's a refrigerant-related problem.

I must strongly recommend against a DIY fix beyond the filter. Tampering with refrigerant lines or the expansion valve requires a certified technician under UAE regulations (as per the Dubai Municipality code for handling refrigerants). Incorrect handling can cause further damage and is a safety risk.

Given the noise is preventing sleep, this needs a professional diagnosis. Our technicians use borescopes to inspect the coil interior and manometers to check pressure levels to pinpoint the exact cause.

For a precise diagnosis and fix, please give our team a call at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can schedule an inspection to get that whistle sorted and your sleep back on track.
