How to clean and prevent black mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be constantly leaking, and now I’ve found patches of black mold on the back of the wardrobe that’s against the wall. It’s been a recurring issue every summer when the humidity spikes. What’s the best way to clean this off for good and is there a specific product I should use here in the UAE to prevent it from coming back?

That's a classic and unfortunately very common issue here in Dubai, especially in areas like JVC with the high humidity. An AC leak providing constant moisture is the perfect breeding ground for mold. Tackling this yourself requires caution.
First, address the source: you MUST get that AC leak fixed by a certified HVAC technician. No amount of cleaning will work if the water intrusion continues. This is non-negotiable. For the mold on the wardrobe: Safety first. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area if possible. For a small patch, a solution of distilled white vinegar and water (50/50) is often more effective than bleach at killing the mold at its roots, as bleach only surface cleans. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, if the mold has penetrated the porous wood of the wardrobe, cleaning the surface may not be sufficient, and the material may need to be replaced. Prevention is key. After cleaning and fixing the leak, use a high-quality EPA-approved fungicidal paint or sealant on the affected wall and wardrobe interior. Products like Foster's 40-80 or similar mold-inhibiting primers available at ACE Hardware or Danube Home are good choices. A dehumidifier or dessicant bags inside the wardrobe will help control the micro-climate. Be aware, what you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg. If the leak has been ongoing, there's a high probability there is mold growth inside the wall cavity. DIY methods cannot assess or remediate this hidden contamination, which poses a continued health risk and can spread spores throughout your apartment via the AC system. For a proper assessment and to ensure it's truly gone for good, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is strongly recommended. We can identify the full extent and provide a certified remediation plan. Feel free to call us for a consultation at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. |
