How to confirm hidden mold behind cabinets without demolition?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the past month and we can't figure out why. I was putting away winter clothes in our walk-in wardrobe and noticed a few of my jackets in the back have these weird black speckles on them, and the whole space has a damp, earthy smell. I'm worried it's hidden mold spreading from the walls behind the shelves. How can I tell for sure if it's mold without tearing out the built-in cabinets?

The symptoms you describe – persistent coughing and a musty odor from a confined space like a wardrobe – are classic indicators of a potential mold issue, especially here in the UAE where high humidity can get trapped inside AC-cooled homes, creating condensation on cooler surfaces like exterior walls.

To confirm hidden mold without demolition, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use non-invasive tools that are essential for this. A borescope inspection involves drilling a very small, easily repairable hole (approx. 1/4 inch) to insert a fiber-optic camera and visually inspect the cavity behind the cabinets. This is the only way to get visual confirmation.

We also use a moisture meter to detect elevated moisture levels within the wall itself, which is a primary cause of mold growth. Finally, an infrared thermal imaging camera can identify "cold spots" or thermal anomalies on the wall surface, which often correspond to areas of dampness and hidden mold colonies.

While DIY mold test kits are available, their reliability is questionable in our region, and they cannot pinpoint the source or extent of a hidden infestation. For your family's health and to properly identify the problem, a certified assessment is the safest approach. We can provide a definitive report on the situation.
