How to control closet moisture without constant AC?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. It’s only been a couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in, and I’m worried it’s going to ruin everything. Besides running the AC constantly, what’s the most effective way to control moisture in a closed storage space like this?

Based on the conditions you've described, that's classic early-stage mold growth due to the high ambient humidity we're experiencing. The outside wall of a villa in Jumeirah is particularly susceptible to thermal bridging, where the heat from outside meets the cooler interior air, creating a perfect pocket for condensation. Constant AC isn't the only, or most efficient, solution.

First, you need immediate moisture control. For a closed closet, I strongly recommend using a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier. Look for silica gel-based units; they're far more effective in our climate than the cheaper, salt-based options. Place one on the top shelf and another on the floor. You'll need to recharge them in the microwave every 2-3 weeks.

Crucially, you must address air circulation. Stagnant, humid air is the problem. Even with the door closed, air needs to move. Install a small, battery-operated closet dehumidifier with a built-in fan – they're designed for this exact purpose. Also, avoid overpacking the closet; leave space between items and the walls.

For your leather goods, wipe them down immediately with a dry, soft cloth and then treat them with a leather conditioner that contains mold inhibitors. Do not put them back in the closet until you've controlled the environment.

If those black spots are already established, it indicates a persistent moisture issue that may require professional assessment to check for potential interstitial condensation within the wall itself. For a thorough inspection and a targeted remediation plan, it's best to call in experts. You can reach our certified team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
