How to control humidity in one room to prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bedroom in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been feeling really clammy for the past couple of weeks, even with the AC on constantly. I just pulled a leather jacket from the back of the closet and found a few small patches of white mold on it. I’m really worried this is happening to our other stuff. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a single room to prevent this from spreading?

Based on the conditions you've described in your JLT apartment, you're dealing with a classic case of localized high humidity, a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in bedrooms and closed-off spaces. The constant AC might be cooling the air but not adequately removing its moisture content, leading to that clammy feel and, critically, creating the perfect environment for mold growth on organic materials like leather, wood, and textiles.

The most effective way to control humidity in a single room is through targeted dehumidification. Your first step should be to acquire a standalone dehumidifier for that guest bedroom. Ensure it's correctly sized for the room's volume; a unit with a capacity of 10-12 liters per day is typically sufficient for a standard bedroom here. Run it continuously, especially with the door closed, and empty the collection reservoir regularly. Secondly, improve air circulation within that closet. Leave the closet doors ajar and consider using a small, battery-operated moisture absorber (like those disposable tubs you can find at hardware stores) inside it as a secondary measure.

Crucially, you must address the mold you've found immediately to prevent spores from spreading. Carefully remove the affected jacket and clean it professionally if possible. Wipe down the entire interior of the closet with a diluted white vinegar solution.

However, the presence of visible mold is a significant indicator. This isn't just about comfort; it's an indoor air quality issue. The UAE's Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on healthy indoor environments, and persistent mold growth falls outside of those standards. The patch you found on the jacket is likely just the visible tip of the iceberg; there could be more colonization in hidden areas like behind walls or under carpets.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and precise hygrometers to identify the exact moisture sources—which could be anything from a minor AC condensate drain issue to a more serious leak—and assess the full extent of the contamination.
