How to dehumidify a damp master bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My master bedroom closet in our villa in Mirdif has started to feel damp to the touch, and some of my leather bags have developed a faint moldy smell over the last few weeks. I run the AC constantly, but it's clearly not enough to stop the moisture from building up in this enclosed space. What's the most effective way to dehumidify a walk-in closet to protect my clothes and stop this from getting worse?

This is a very common issue we see in villas across Mirdif, Jumeirah, and other Dubai communities. The problem isn't your AC's cooling capacity, but its inability to manage latent heat (humidity) effectively in a confined, poorly ventilated space like a walk-in closet.
First, stop the source. Check for any hidden leaks from adjacent bathrooms or pipe chases—common in UAE villa construction. Even a tiny, persistent leak will overwhelm any dehumidification efforts. For immediate action, you need to aggressively lower the humidity in that closet. A portable desiccant dehumidifier is your best bet, not a refrigerant-based one commonly found in hardware stores. Desiccant models are far more effective in the high heat and lower load conditions of a closet and work better at the lower temperatures your AC maintains. Run it continuously for 48-72 hours to dry out the space and your leather goods. Long-term, you must improve air circulation. Ensure the closet's AC vent is fully open and unobstructed by clothing. Consider installing a small, louvered door at the bottom to allow room air to circulate into the closet, or have an HVAC technician add a dedicated transfer grille. Silica gel desiccant packs are a good maintenance tool, but they are a supplement, not a solution. The moldy smell on your bags indicates possible hyphae growth, which a simple wipe-down won't eradicate. They will likely require professional hygienization to prevent recurrence and protect your investment. If the dampness persists, it's crucial to get a professional inspection. We can identify if this is a simple ventilation issue or something more serious, like a concealed condensation leak within the wall.
