How to find and remove mold in Jumeirah villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a really strong musty smell coming from the walk-in closet. It seems to have gotten much worse since the weather got more humid last week, and I’m worried it's mold. What’s the best way to find the source and get rid of it for good?

Good day. Thank you for your query; this is a very common issue we encounter in Jumeirah villas, especially with the recent spike in humidity. That distinct musty odor is almost always indicative of microbial growth, and your suspicion of mold is likely correct. The high humidity provides the perfect breeding ground for spores that may have been dormant.

To find the source, start with a thorough visual inspection inside the closet. Look for any visible discoloration—black speckling, white fuzzy patches, or greenish growth—on walls, baseboards, the ceiling, and especially the back of stored items like shoes and leather goods. Feel for dampness on walls; a moisture meter is the professional tool for this. Crucially, check the adjacent bathroom and any plumbing lines running near the closet for leaks, which are a prime culprit. Poor ventilation exacerbates the problem signifigantly.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 sq. meter), you can clean it with a dedicated antifungal solution (never bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots). However, given the strength of the odor you describe and the villa's construction, the source is likely hidden—within the wall cavity from a slow pipe leak, under the flooring, or in the HVAC system serving that room. Disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores throughout your home.

For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture and air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations, which is vital for the remediation plan. All our protocols follow the strict UAE Green Building regulations and standards for indoor air quality. Improper removal can violate these standards and lead to recurrence.
