How to fix sun-warped floor and prevent future damage?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom in my Marina apartment gets direct afternoon sun and the wooden floor near the window has started to warp and lift slightly in the last month. I’m worried it’s going to get worse and ruin the entire floor. What are the steps involved in fixing this and preventing it from happening again, especially with our heat?

Good question. This is a common issue here in Dubai, especially in sun-exposed units in Marina with all that glass. That warping is heat and UV damage causing the wood to lose its moisture content and physically deform. Here's the breakdown.

First, a professional inspection is critical to assess the extent. We need to determine if it's just the finish, the planks themselves, or if there's a underlying moisture issue exacerbated by the heat. For serious warping where the boards are lifting, the remediation process typically involves a few steps. The affected boards will need to be carefully removed. The subfloor must then be inspected for any damage or moisture. New boards will be acclimatized to your apartment's specific temperature and humidity for at least 72 hours before installation to prevent future shrinkage or expansion. They are then installed, sanded, and refinished to match the existing floor.

Prevention is key. You must address the solar heat gain. The most effective solution is applying a high-performance, UV-blocking window film. Look for one that meets the Dubai Green Building regulations for energy efficiency. Heavy thermal curtains, kept closed during the peak afternoon sun, are also a good secondary measure. Maintaining a consistent indoor climate with your AC, ideally between 22-24°C, will significantly reduce thermal stress on the flooring.

Given the risk of further damage to the entire floor, I highly recommend a proper assessment. Our team can identify the core issue and provide a permanent solution. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an inspection.
