How to permanently remove and prevent closet mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom closet has been leaking a bit, and now I’m seeing small black spots on the wall behind our wardrobe. I wiped it off with vinegar, but I’m worried it’s just going to come back, especially with the humidity rising again. What’s the most effective and safe way to clean this and stop the mold from returning for good?

The issue you're describing is extremely common in Dubai due to our high humidity and AC-dependent climate. The small black spots are likely Cladosporium or Stachybotrys, which thrive in damp, poorly ventilated spaces. While vinegar can kill surface mold temporarily, it is not a permanent solution and does not address the root cause.

First, safety: Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For a small area, a solution of diluted detergent (not bleach, as it can release harmful fumes and doesn't prevent regrowth) can be used to clean the surface. However, the most critical step is to COMPLETELY dry the area. Move the wardrobe and use a dehumidifier and fan for at least 48 hours. The wall cavity behind may be wet, requiring professional drying equipment.

To prevent it from returning, you MUST fix the AC leak. This is the non-negotiable first step. Condensate drain line blockages are a frequent culprit here. Once the moisture source is eliminated, consider applying a mold-resistant primer before repainting.

Given that the mold is due to an AC leak and is on a wall, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Hidden moisture within the wall or HVAC system can lead to widespread contamination and pose health risks. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find hidden dampness that isn't visible.

For a proper assessment and a guaranteed remediation plan, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We'll ensure it's done safely and permanently, in compliance with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.
