How to permanently remove black mold from closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. I'm really worried it's spread behind there, especially with the high humidity lately. What's the best way to handle this myself to make sure it doesn't come back after I clean it?

Based on the location you described—an interior wall closet—and the recent high humidity, this is a classic scenario for hidden mold proliferation. The visible patch is likely just the tip of the iceberg. In Dubai's climate, the primary driver is condensation and high ambient moisture, especially in poorly ventilated spaces like closets on interior walls.

Do not just wipe it with bleach. This will only remove the surface discoloration (the spore-producing bodies) but will not address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root-like structures) embedded in the wall material. This is why it almost always returns.

For a permanent DIY solution, you must first identify and eliminate the moisture source. For an interior wall, this is most often due to condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the warmer wall cavity, or a minor, hidden plumbing leak. Improve ventilation immediately. Consider using a moisture meter to check the wall's water content; levels above 15-20% indicate an active problem.

For cleaning, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, if the drywall is soft, discolored, or the mold returns within days, the material is compromised.

Crucially, UAE regulations for tenant-landlord responsibilities often place the onus on the property owner for structural issues like this. Furthermore, improper remediation can spread spores and exacerbate the problem.

Given you've lived there for two years and just noticed it, the extent behind the wall could be significant. For a permanent fix and to ensure your family's health, a professional inspection with borescope cameras and air quality testing is strongly recommended to assess the full scope.
