How to permanently remove black mold from humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. I’m in a Jumeirah Park villa and it seems worse since the weather got more humid. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good without having to call in a professional team immediately?

Based on your description, that's a classic case of surface mold growth, exacerbated by Dubai's high ambient humidity and lack of air circulation in the closet. Permanently removing it requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture issue.

First, safety: Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not attempt this if you have respiratory issues. For a small area (<1 sq meter), you can clean it with a solution of detergent and water, but for porous surfaces like drywall or wood, this often only removes the surface stain, not the root structure.

The most effective DIY solution we often recommend is a diluted white vinegar spray (80% vinegar, 20% water). Spray it generously, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. Do NOT use bleach, as it only bleaches the color and doesn't kill the roots, and the chlorine can react in enclosed spaces.

However, the critical part is the "for good" aspect. Permanence is impossible without solving the humidity. You MUST improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open, use a powerful dehumidifier in the room (aim for below 50% RH), and ensure your AC is functioning correctly and running consistently. In a Jumeirah Park villa, the problem could also stem from a minor leak in the external wall or roof, which would require professional diagnosis.

Given it's spreading and located behind items, the extent might be worse than it appears. For a guaranteed permanent solution and to ensure it's not a symptom of a larger building envelope issue, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We can conduct moisture mapping and air quality tests to identify the true source. Feel free to call our team for a consultation at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
