How to permanently stop AC mold in Jumeirah Lakes Towers?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the windowsill for a couple of weeks, and now I'm seeing these small black spots in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. We live in a high-rise in Jumeirah Lakes Towers and keep the AC on most of the time. What's the best way to clean this and stop the mold from coming back for good?

Based on the symptoms you described, you're dealing with a classic case of AC-induced mold, extremely common in JLT's high-rises due to the high humidity and constant AC operation. The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which thrive on the constant moisture from that leak.
First, address the source: the leaking AC unit. This is non-negotiable. The condensate drain line is likely clogged with microbial growth or the drip pan is damaged. You must have a certified HVAC technician service the unit to clear the drain line and ensure proper drainage. This is the "permanent" solution; without it, mold will always return. For the existing mold on the wall/ceiling junction: 1. Safety first. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. 2. For a small area, a solution of detergent and water can be used for cleaning. However, given the location (porous surfaces like drywall and concrete) and the likelihood of hidden growth behind, surface cleaning is often insufficient. 3. The moisture has probably wicked up into the wall cavity. This requires professional assessment with a moisture meter to determine the extent of the damage. Under UAE guidelines, specifically the Dubai Municipality code, significant mold remediation, especially in multi-tenant buildings, often requires a licensed professional to ensure cross-contamination is prevented and waste is disposed of correctly. My strong recommendation is to get a professional inspection. We can assess the HVAC issue, the extent of the mold growth inside the wall, and provide a certified hygienization protocol to solve it permanently. Ignoring it will only allow the problem to get worse and potentially affect your health and the building's integrity. |
