How to prevent closet mold in humid Dubai weather?« Back to Previous Page

The master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah has started to feel damp, and I’ve spotted a few small patches of black mold on the leather boots and bags I stored in there. This happened last winter too after the humidity spiked, and I had to throw so much stuff away. What’s the most effective way to keep the humidity out of a walk-in closet here, other than just running the AC 24/7?

As a certified mold inspector here in Dubai, this is a very common issue we see, especially in villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah. The high ambient humidity, combined with poor air circulation in enclosed spaces like closets, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, particularly on organic materials like leather.

The most effective strategy is a multi-pronged approach. Firstly, you absolutely must address the vapor source. For a walk-in closet, I strongly recommend installing a standalone dehumidifier with a built-in humidistat. Set it to maintain humidity levels below 55%, which is the critical threshold for mold growth. Look for a model with a continuous drainage hose option to avoid constant emptying.

Secondly, improve air circulation. This is non-negotiable. Install a small, quiet exhaust fan in the closet that vents to the outside, or if that's not possible, a small circulating fan to keep air moving. Never pack items tightly; leave space between your belongings and the walls. Leave the closet door ajar for a few hours each day to allow room air to mix in.

Thirdly, consider your storage. Avoid storing damp or slightly damp items. Use plastic storage bins with tight-sealing lids for items not frequently used, rather than cardboard boxes which absorb moisture. Silica gel desiccant packs can be placed in shoe boxes and handbags, but they need to be regenerated frequently in our climate.

Given that this is a recurring issue and you've already had property damage, a professional inspection is wise to rule out a more serious hidden problem, like a small plumbing leak or compromised wall insulation. We can conduct moisture mapping to identify the exact source.
