How to prevent mold in my humid master closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My master bedroom closet on the inside wall has started to get black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored there, and it smells really damp. I noticed it got much worse right after that humid spell we had last week. I run the AC constantly but it seems like the cold air isn't really reaching the back of that enclosed space. What’s the most effective way to stop this from happening again, maybe a specific dehumidifier or something else I can put inside the closet itself?

Ah, a classic issue here in Dubai, especially with that recent spike in humidity. That damp smell and black speckles are tell-tale signs of a mold colony starting, and you're right, it's directly linked to the high humidity and that enclosed space. The cold air from your AC main unit simply isn't circulating enough in that dead-air space of the closet, allowing moisture to condense, especially on your leather goods.
The most effective immediate action is indeed to improve the local environment inside the closet. A simple small, portable electric dehumidifier is a good start, but for a closet, you might find disposable moisture absorber pods (like those from DampRid) more practical. They contain calcium chloride crystals that pull moisture from the air. Place one or two on the floor of the closet. More proactively, a mini-dehumidifier, the kind that uses thermoelectric (Peltier) cooling with a small reservoir, is highly effective for enclosed spaces like this. You can find them online or at stores like Ace Hardware. Also, try to leave the closet door slightly ajar for a few hours each day to encourage cross-ventilation and let the room's AC air mix in. For a more permeant solution, you should really consider having a professional assessment. The wall itself might have a issue, like a tiny hidden pipe leak or insufficient insulation, which is causing the surface temperature to drop below the dew point—this is a big deal here under the UAE's strict building codes for humidity control. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint these cold spots exactly. If the mold growth is already visible on your belongings, the spores are definitely in the air and on the walls, and simple wiping isn't enough; it needs proper remediation to stop it from coming right back. If the problem persists after trying those tips, definitely give us a call for a proper inspection. We can check for those hidden issues and make sure its truly sorted.
