How to professionally remediate black mold in a Dubai villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom's walk-in closet has had a damp, earthy smell for a couple of months now, and I've started waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. I finally pulled everything out and found fuzzy black patches on the back wall where my clothes are hanging. We’re in an older villa in Al Barsha and I’m really worried this is making us sick. What is the most effective way to get this professionally remediated to make sure the mold is completely gone and doesn't come back?

Good afternoon. That's a classic and unfortunately very common scenario for villas here, especially in older areas like Al Barsha where construction methods and the high humidity create the perfect storm for mold growth. The symptoms you're describing (stuffy nose, itchy eyes) are a clear indicator of exposure to mold spores, so it's good you're addressing this.

Professional remediation for a situation like this is not a simple cleaning job; it's a containment and removal process. Here’s the standard of care we follow in the UAE, aligned with guidelines from bodies like the Dubai Municipality:

First, the area must be isolated with physical barriers and negative air pressure machines (air scrubbers with HEPA filtration) to prevent cross-contamination of the rest of your home. Our technicians will be in full PPE. The affected drywall and insulation behind it are likely compromised and usually need to be removed and discarded – simply wiping the surface is not sufficient. All contents (clothes, boxes) will need to be professionally cleaned or assessed for disposal.

The structural cavity is then HEPA-vacuumed, abrasive-blasted if necessary, and treated with an EPA-approved antimicrobial agent. Crucially, the source of the moisture MUST be identified and rectified. In your case, it could be a small plumbing leak in the wall, condensation from an AC duct, or moisture wicking from the foundation. Without solving this, the mold will 100% return.

Given the health symptoms and the extent you’ve described, a professional inspection and remediation is strongly advised. We can properly assess the hidden damage and ensure it's done safely.
