How to remove and prevent black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It's been extra humid lately and we keep the AC running constantly, but the closet is always a bit stuffy. I’m worried it will spread to our clothes.
What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Good question. This is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially with our high humidity levels and the way our AC systems operate. That black patch in your closet corner is likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both common in our region. The fact it's on an exterior wall suggests a possible thermal bridge where cool indoor air meets the hot outside wall, causing condensation – the perfect breeding ground for mold.
First, for a small patch (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Do NOT just wipe it with bleach. This will only remove the surface colour and can actually feed the root structure (hyphae) embedded in the wall. You need a proper EPA-approved fungicidal disinfectant. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area thoroughly, then allow it to dry completely. However, the cleaning is only 10% of the job. The real solution is addressing the moisture source. Your stuffy closet indicates severely restricted airflow. The AC is running, but the cold, dry air isn't circulating into that closed space, allowing humidity to stagnate. You MUST improve ventilation. Leave the closet doors ajar regularly, and consider installing a small louvered vent in the door or a battery-operated dehumidifier puck inside the closet. For a permanent fix, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We need to check for hidden mold behind the wardrobe and, crucially, use a thermal imaging camera to identify that exact condensation point on the exterior wall to confirm it's not a more serious insulation issue. DIY solutions often fail because they don't find the root cause. If the mold returns or you see any spreading, don't risk your health or your belongings.
