How to remove and prevent black mold under bedroom carpet?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming along the edges of the bedroom carpet, right up against the wall. The room has a wall-hung AC unit that I know drips a little sometimes, and I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped underneath. What's the best way to get this removed and treated properly to stop it from coming back, especially before the summer humidity really kicks in?

The black spots you're observing along the carpet edges are a classic indicator of mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the constant use of AC units. The wall-hung AC likely has a clogged condensate drain line, causing excess moisture to drip and become trapped beneath the carpet and within the underlay. This creates a perfect microenvironment for mold, especially Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold), to flourish.
Proper removal is critical. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar is strongly discouraged as it only addresses surface discoloration and can aerosolize harmful spores. For a confirmed and localized case, the correct remediation process involves isolating the area with polyethylene sheeting, HEPA vacuuming the affected carpet section, and then physically removing and disposing of both the mold-compromised carpet and, crucially, the underlying pad, which acts as a moisture reservoir. The subfloor must then be mechanically abraded and treated with an EPA-approved antimicrobial agent. However, given the location near the wall, the moisture may have wicked into the wall cavity, which necessitates a more invasive inspection. Prevention is key. The AC unit must be serviced immediately to clear the drain line and ensure proper condensate flow. To combat Dubai's climate, maintain indoor humidity levels below 60% using a dehumidifier and ensure adequate ventilation. Consider applying an anti-microbial coating to the subfloor before reinstalling new materials. Due to the high risk of cross-contamination and hidden growth, I highly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and borescopes to assess the full extent of the damage behind walls and under floors.
