How to remove and prevent mold behind my sofa?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in our Jumeirah villa has started to show a few small black spots of mold. We noticed it a couple of weeks after that really humid period last month, and the room always feels a bit damp. What's the best way to clean this off and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

The mold growth behind your sofa in Jumeirah is a classic symptom of the Dubai climate. The recent high humidity combined with a lack of air circulation behind the furniture created a perfect microclimate for mold spores to proliferate. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source. Given the location, it is likely due to condensation from the temperature differential between the cold wall (potentially from an AC unit on the other side) and the humid room air, a common issue here.
For a small, isolated area (less than 1 square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of diluted detergent (not bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper) can be used to wipe the surface. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried immediately afterwards with a fan. However, surface cleaning is a temporary fix if the underlying cause isn't resolved. Permanent prevention requires a multi-pronged approach. First, improve air circulation by moving the sofa at least 5-6 inches away from the wall. Second, use a dehumidifier in that room, especially during the more humid months, to maintain indoor humidity levels below 60%. Third, ensure your AC system is serviced regularly and is effectively removing moisture from the air. For a lasting solution and to ensure the mold hasn't penetrated the wall material, a professional inspection is highly recommended. Our certified technicians at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint moisture sources and conduct air quality tests to determine spore count levels, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's environmental health standards. We can then execute a targeted remediation and hygienization protocol to resolve the issue permanently. For a comprehensive assessment, please call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. |
