How to remove black mold from AC leak and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a little water onto the carpet in my bedroom closet, and I've just found a patch of black mold growing on the skirting board behind my shoes. It’s been extra humid in Dubai the last few weeks and I’m worried it’s made it worse. What’s the best way to clean this myself and stop it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially with the recent high humidity levels. The AC condensate leak is providing the constant moisture source that mold needs to thrive.
For the small patch you've described, you can attempt a DIY cleaning, but with extreme caution. First, put on an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area and avoid disturbing the mold to prevent spores from becoming airborne. For a non-porous surface like a skirting board, a solution of diluted detergent or a specialized mold cleaner can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, if the mold has penetrated the porous surface of the skirting board or the underlying carpet and carpet underlay, cleaning the surface will not be sufficient. These materials often need to be removed and replaced to properly eradicate the problem. The absolute key to prevention is fixing the source of the moisture. You MUST have the AC unit serviced to address the condensate drain line leak. This is a non-negotiable first step. Afterwards, ensure excellent ventilation in that closet. Consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier in that enclosed space, as our ambient humidity is often above the 60% threshold that allows mold to grow. For a proper assessment, especially to check for hidden growth inside the wall or under the carpet, a professional inspection is highly recommended. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find problems you can't see. If the affected area is larger than roughly one square meter, UAE health and safety guidelines generally advise professional remediation.
