How to remove black mold from closet wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. I'm worried the humidity is getting in from somewhere. What's the best way to handle this myself before it gets worse?

Okay, so you've got some black mold in the closet. First thing, safety. That black mold could be Stachybotrys, which is not something to mess around with. Before you do anything, get yourself a proper N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and some safety goggles. You do not want to be breathing in those spores.

For a small patch, you can try a DIY clean. Mix a solution of white vinegar and water (50/50) or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). NEVER mix bleach and vinegar – that creates toxic chlorine gas. Scrub the area gently. But here’s the crucial part for Dubai: if the wall feels damp, you have a moisture issue. Cleaning the mold is pointless if you don't fix the leak or the condensation problem. That wall might be a thermal bridge where cold air from the AC meets the outside heat, causing condensation inside the wall cavity.

Honestly, because you mention dampness and it's on an external wall, this is a red flag. In the UAE's climate, hidden moisture can lead to major structural issues and health risks far beyond what you see. A professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the exact moisture source with tools like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters. We see this all the time here.

If you're unsure or the patch is larger than a square foot, just call a pro. It's not worth the risk. You can reach our certified inspectors at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a proper assessment.
