How to remove black mold in Dubai home ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the wall facing the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it seems to be getting bigger. I’m really worried about our health and the damage to the wall. What’s the most effective way to treat this ourselves, and when is it time to call a professional company here in the UAE?

Good day. That's a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially with the recent high humidity levels and the fact that many buildings have cold exterior walls that attract condensation. As a certified mold inspector, I can provide some guidance, but must stress caution.

For a small patch (less than 1 square foot) behind the wardrobe, you can attempt a DIY approach. First, safety is paramount. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area from the rest of the room if possible. The wall must be completely dry. Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water or a diluted detergent (avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture). Scrub the area thoroughly. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely using fans and a dehumidifier—this is the most critical step in our climate.

However, given the location (an exterior wall) and the fact it's recurring, this is a strong indicator of a underlying issue, likely interstitial condensation within the wall cavity itself. This is beyond a surface cleaning fix. DIY methods often fail to address the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth and potential structural damage.

For anything larger than 1 square foot, or if there's a musty odor or any health concerns, UAE health and safety regulations strongly recommend a professional assessment. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the exact moisture source and assess the extent of the contamination within the wall. Improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the problem.

For a proper inspection and permanent solution, it's best to call our team. We can provide a definitive assessment and a remediation plan that complies with local standards.
