How to remove black mold in Dubai villa and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading on the ceiling of our walk-in closet. It's the interior wall that backs onto the master bathroom, and it's gotten much worse since last week's humidity spike. What's the best way to tackle this myself to stop it from coming back, or do I need to call a professional?

Good question, and a very common issue we see in Jumeirah villas, especially with that recent humidity spike. That location—a closet backing onto a bathroom—is a classic hotspot for condensation and mold growth.
First, safety: do not attempt to remove that mold yourself if the patch is larger than about one square meter. Disturbing it can aerosolize spores and create a much larger contamination issue. For a small patch, you can carefully clean it with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the symptom, not the cause. The root of your problem is almost certainly high humidity and a temperature differential causing condensation within that wall cavity. The recent spike accelerated it. You likely have a combination of factors: insufficient bathroom ventilation (your exhaust fan may be underpowered or blocked), a lack of a vapor barrier in the construction, and possibly even a small plumbing leak from the bathroom that's adding moisture. To prevent it from coming back, you must control the humidity. Ensure the bathroom fan is working properly and run it for at least 30 minutes after showers. Consider adding a standalone dehumidifier or a portable AC unit in that closet. For a permanent fix, the wall may need to be opened to inspect for leaks, add proper insulation, and install a vapor barrier, which is a significant job. Given the spread you've described, this warrants a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source and hygrometers to measure RH levels inside the wall. DIY solutions often fail because they miss the hidden problem. For a proper assessment and remediation quote, it's best to call our team.
