How to remove black mold in humid UAE climate?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this black speckled stuff growing along the bottom of the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's in the corner that faces the sea, so I guess the constant humidity is the culprit. What is the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, and is there a specific product available at ACE or Homebox that you'd recommend for this UAE climate?

Based on your description of black, speckled growth behind a wardrobe in a sea-facing master bedroom, you are almost certainly dealing with a classic case of mold due to high ambient humidity and lack of air circulation. The stagnant, moist air trapped behind the furniture provides an ideal breeding ground for mold spores.
For a small, contained area (less than 1 square meter), a DIY approach may be feasible. First, put on an N95 mask and gloves. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. The most effective consumer-grade product available at ACE or Homebox for the UAE climate is a dedicated fungicidal wash, such as HG Mould Spray or Borax-based solutions. These are formulated to kill the mold at the root, unlike bleach which only removes surface discoloration. Thoroughly scrub the affected area with the solution as per the product instructions. After treatment, it is critical to address the source of moisture. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining correctly, and use a dehumidifier or your AC's dry mode to maintain humidity levels below 60%. Leave the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to promote continuous airflow. However, I must stress a significant caution. DIY methods only address visible growth. If the mold has penetrated the plasterboard or is widespread, professional remediation is required. The UAE's strict health and environmental regulations, particularly in rental properties, often necessitate certified remediation to ensure the problem is resolved safely and thoroughly, preventing health risks and structural damage. Disturbing mold improperly can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination throughout your home. For a definitive diagnosis and a guaranteed solution, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify the exact moisture source and extent of contamination, followed by industrial-grade HEPA filtration and antimicrobial treatments.
