How to remove mildew smell from winter clothes safely?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet has been leaking a little for a couple of months, but now all our winter clothes and blankets stored in there have a really strong musty smell. I'm worried about my kids wearing these jackets now that the weather is getting cooler and it's triggering their allergies. What's the fastest and most effective way to get the mildew smell out and make sure it's safe for them?

That's a very common and concerning issue here in the UAE, especially with our high humidity levels acting as a constant fuel source for microbial growth. The musty smell is a clear sign of mold or mildew, and given the AC leak, you're dealing with a persistent moisture problem that has saturated both the air and your stored items.
First, do not put those clothes on your children. The odors are caused by Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOCs), which are irritants and can trigger allergic reactions and asthma. The fastest initial step is to remove all items from the closet immediately to prevent further contamination. For the clothing itself, conventional washing often isn't enough to break down the mycotoxins. You need to launder everything with a mold-inhibiting additive; look for products containing hydrogen peroxide or tea tree oil. A hot water wash cycle (if the fabric allows) is crucial. For non-washable items, professional ozone or hydroxyl generator treatment is the most effective solution. However, cleaning the clothes is only half the battle. The source is the closet itself. The AC leak must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence. The closet space will then require a thorough inspection and likely professional remediation. The damp drywall, insulation, and flooring behind the walls are probably contaminated, which is a violation of Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety criteria. Simply wiping surfaces won't fix this. For a problem of this duration, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to ensure the environment is safe. We can conduct a full indoor air quality assessment to identify all affected areas. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. We'll get that smell out of your clothes and, more importantly, make sure the root cause in your home is resolved. |
