How to remove mold and prevent humidity behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah has started to show these black splotches, and we only found it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. I'm worried it's from all the humidity we've had this winter, even with the AC running. We really want to fix this properly so it doesn't just come back in a few months. What is the best way to treat the mold on the wall itself and what can we do to stop the humidity from building up behind there in the future?

Good question. This is a classic issue we see in Jumeirah and across Dubai, especially after a humid winter. That wall behind the wardrobe is a prime spot for mold because it's a cold surface with no air circulation, allowing condensation to form.

First, for the treatment: Do not just wipe it with bleach. This only removes the surface stain, not the root structure. For a small area, you should wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected wall with a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner designed for masonry, not a generic household product. You must physically remove all visible growth. After scrubbing, the area should be HEPA vacuumed and then treated with a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting. This is crucial to prevent regrowth.

However, if the staining is extensive (covering more than a square meter) or you notice a musty smell in the room, this is a sign of a deeper issue. The mold you see is often just the tip of the iceberg. In these cases, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact source of the moisture and the full extent of the contamination, which is often inside the wall cavity.

For prevention, the solution is all about air flow and moisture control. Leave a 2-3 inch gap between the wardrobe and the wall. You can also ask your AC maintenance company to check that your unit is properly dehumidifying and not just cooling; sometimes the drain lines are clogged, reducing its efficiency. Ensuring your apartment is well-ventilated is key.

For a proper assessment to guarantee it’s solved for good, it’s best to get a professional opinion. You can call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection.
