How to remove mold from my villa wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it when I moved the furniture to clean. The wall feels damp and the patch is black and fuzzy. What's the best way to tackle this myself before calling a professional?

Okay, this is a serious situation, especially with kids involved. First, stop. Do not just wipe it. In the UAE's climate, that dampness and black fuzzy growth is a major red flag. The visible mold is just the "fruit"; the real root system (hyphae) is likely deep inside that wall, especially common in villas here due to condensation issues and sometimes underlying leaks.

For a DIY attempt on a small patch (less than 1 sq. ft), safety is paramount. You MUST isolate the area. Seal the room, turn off the AC to prevent spore dissemination throughout the house. Get a proper N95 mask (not a cloth one), goggles, and gloves. A simple bleach solution is not sufficient and can actually feed the mold. You need a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide, but many strong ones are restricted here for professional use.

Mix a solution of distilled white vinegar and water (80/20) or a concetration of hydrogen peroxide (3%) and spray. Let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. BUT, and this is a huge but, this only addresses the surface. If the wall is damp, the mold will return within weeks. You must identify and fix the moisture source—could be a leaking AC drain line, capillary rise from the slab, or poor exterior waterproofing, all very common problems in Jumeirah villas.

Honestly, with the described dampness, the size you're hinting at, and your children's health symptoms, this is beyond a DIY fix. You need a professional inspection to assess the moisture source and the extent of contamination inside the wall cavity. Disturbing it improperly can make the air quality much, much worse for your family.

Please, get a certified expert to look at it. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a proper assessment. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find the source, which is absolutely critical. Your family's health isnt worth the risk.
