How to remove mold smell and make room safe?« Back to Previous Page

Our downstairs guest room carpet got completely soaked during the flooding last week and even after it dried, there's a really strong damp smell that won't go away. My two young kids have been sleeping in that room since their grandparents visited and now my youngest has developed a persistent cough and a rash on his arms. I'm worried the mold is making them sick. What's the most effective way to get rid of the mold smell and make sure the room is safe for them again?

Based on your description, this is a serious indoor air quality issue that requires immediate professional attention. The persistent damp smell is a clear indicator of active microbial growth, likely mold and bacteria, within the carpet, its underlay, and potentially the subflooring and lower wall cavities. This is extremely common after flooding here in the UAE due to our high humidity, which prevents proper drying and creates a perfect breeding ground for spores.

Your child's cough and rash are significant health red flags, potentially linked to mycotoxin exposure or allergic reactions. DIY cleaning with surface sprays is completely insufficient and can aerosolize spores, making the problem worse.

Per UAE health and safety guidelines (like those from Dubai Municipality), porous materials like carpet and underlay that have been saturated with flood water must be removed and disposed of properly. The underlying concrete slab needs specialized drying and sanitization. A certified inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, is not just recommended; it's essential to determine the full extent of the contamination.

You need a professional remediation company like ours. We use industrial-grade HEPA air scrubbers, desiccant dehumidifiers, and antimicrobial treatments approved for use in the UAE to properly remediate the space and make it safe. Do not let your children sleep in that room until it has been professionally cleared.
