How to remove musty smell from bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Mirdif has been great, but every time I open the closet in our main bedroom to get my abaya, I get hit with a really strong musty smell. It's worse now after the recent humid weather, and I'm worried it's mold that will ruin our clothes. What's the best way to treat this and keep the smell from coming back for good?

Good afternoon. That musty odor you're describing in your Mirdif villa closet is a very common issue here in the UAE, especially after a period of high humidity. It's almost certainly a sign of microbial growth, which we need to address properly to protect your belongings and your indoor air quality.
First, remove all items from the closet. Inspect the walls, ceiling, and especially the back wall (which might be an exterior wall subject to condensation). Look for any visible signs of mold growth – black speckling, white fuzzy patches, or discoloration. A simple DIY cleaning solution for non-porous surfaces is a mix of white vinegar and water or a diluted bleach solution (ensure good ventilation). However, this only addresses the surface and not the root cause. The root cause in our climate is almost always excess moisture. The closet is a stagnant, confined space with little air circulation, allowing humidity to build up. You must identify the moisture source. Is there a leak from an AC condensate drain line running in the wall? Is the room's air conditioner undersized, causing high relative humidity? Is the closet crammed full, preventing air from the room circulating inside it? For a persistent smell, a surface clean is not enough. Spores will remain, and the smell will return. I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture and moisture meters to quantify the problem, which is crucial for a permanent fix. UAE regulations, particularly Dubai Municipality's public health guidelines, emphasize the importance of addressing indoor mold for occupant health. The remediation process involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, and applying specialized antimicrobial agents to neutralize the odor and spores at the source. To prevent recurrence, we'd advise installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a passive moisture absorber in the closet and ensuring you never overfill it to allow for air movement. If the smell is strong, it's best to get it professionally assessed. You can reach our certified team for a thorough inspection at 800-MOLDS or hello@saniservice.com. We serve the Mirdif area frequently. |
