How to safely clean mold from toddler's AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in my toddler's bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has started blowing out a really musty smell, and I’ve just spotted some black specks around the edges. With how humid it’s been lately, I’m worried it’s mold and could be affecting his allergies. What’s the best way to clean this safely without the spores spreading, and should I get a professional to look at the AC unit itself?

Based on your description, this is a classic scenario we see in Dubai villas, especially during the humid summer months. The black specks are almost certainly mold growth, and that musty smell is a key indicator of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) being circulated directly into your toddler's room, which can absolutely exacerbate allergies and respiratory issues.
Safely cleaning it yourself is possible for a very minor, surface-level issue, but you must take extreme precautions to avoid aerosolizing the spores. First, shut down the AC unit completely at the thermostat and at the circuit breaker to prevent it from activating. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. For cleaning, do NOT use bleach. Instead, use a solution of white vinegar or a commercially available, EPA-approved mold remediation detergent. Lightly mist the area to dampen the spores, then carefully wipe the vent slats and surrounding area with a microfiber cloth, which you should immediately seal in a plastic bag and dispose of. However, the visible growth on the vent is often just the tip of the iceberg. The real source is likely inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils of the AC unit itself, where condensation creates a perfect breeding ground. This hidden contamination will just blow spores back into the room after a superficial cleaning. Given that this is in a child's bedroom and the problem is already producing a noticeable odor, we strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians use borescopes to inspect the internal ducts and can perform hygienization of the entire system, which is crucial for a permanent solution and aligns with Dubai Municipality's standards for indoor air quality.
