How to safely clean mold from toddler's clothes?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking into the wardrobe in my kids' room, and I just pulled out their winter clothes to find a bunch of them covered in black spots. With the humidity lately, I'm really worried it's spreading. What's the safest way to clean this without using harsh chemicals that could affect my toddler and newborn?

Good question, and a very common issue here in Dubai, especially with our humidity and AC problems. Seeing mold on your children's clothes is definitely alarming, but you can handle it safely.

First, do not simply brush the mold off indoors. This will release millions of spores into the air, which your toddler and newborn could inhale. Take the affected garments outside to a well-ventilated balcony for inspection and cleaning.

For a safe, non-toxic clean, white distilled vinegar is your best first step. Create a solution of one part vinegar to three parts warm water and submerge the clothes for at least an hour. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant that kills over 80% of mold species. After soaking, wash the clothes on the hottest setting the fabric allows with your regular, fragrance-free detergent. Adding an extra rinse cycle is advisable. Sun-drying is ideal, as UV rays are a natural mold killer.

However, this addresses the symptom, not the cause. The fact that your AC is leaking into the wardrobe is the critical issue. This constant moisture source means the mold is almost certainly growing within the wardrobe structure and the AC system itself, continually contaminating the environment. For the safety of your family, especially with young children who are more vulnerable to mold exposure, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We need to identify the source within the AC unit and assess the wardrobe for hidden growth.
