How to safely dispose of mold in my Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've been in our villa in Al Barsha for a few years, but lately after the heavy dew in the mornings, I've noticed a patch of green, slippery mold growing on the shaded side of our backyard wall where the kids play. I’m worried they could slip or touch it. What's the proper way to dispose of this according to Dubai Municipality guidelines—can I just pressure wash it and scrub it with bleach, or is it considered hazardous waste that needs a special collection?

As a certified IEQ specialist operating in Dubai, this is a common issue we address, especially after periods of high humidity and dew. The growth you're describing on your wall in Al Barsha is likely a combination of algae and mold, facilitated by shade and moisture retention.
According to Dubai Municipality public health guidelines, small-scale biological growth like this on a hardscape surface is not typically classified as hazardous waste requiring special disposal if handled correctly on-site. The primary concern is preventing spores from aerosolizing and entering the indoor environment or the storm drain system. The method you suggested is partially correct but needs refinement for safety and effectiveness. Do NOT use a high-pressure washer, as this will aerosolize the spores, creating a significant inhalation hazard and spreading the problem. Instead, you should first lightly wet the area with a surfactant (a few drops of dish soap in water) to suppress spores. Then, scrub with a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner approved for such use—a 10% bleach solution is common but can damage certain surfaces and is less effective on porous materials. We typically recommend a proprietary, non-abrasive biocide. The resulting wash water and any physical debris must be contained. It should be mopped up with absorbent cloths, which must then be disposed of in a sealed plastic bag with your regular municipal solid waste. Allowing it to simply run into the ground or drain is not compliant. For a patch larger than one square meter, or if there's any suspicion of internal wall damage or indoor contamination, a professional assessment is strongly advised. Our teams are equipped to handle this safely and in full compliance with DM regulations.
