How to safely remove black mold in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It seems worse since the recent humidity spike. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes for the past few weeks, and we're starting to worry it's connected. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this ourselves without making the health issues worse?

Based on the symptoms you're describing—stuffy nose and itchy eyes—and the location on an exterior wall, this is a classic scenario we see in Dubai villas, especially after humidity spikes. That black patch is likely just the visible tip of the iceberg.

First, safety is paramount. Do NOT attempt to dry scrub or vacuum the area, as this will aerosolize the spores and absolutely worsen your wife's respiratory symptoms. For a small patch (less than 1 sq. ft), you can carefully clean it, but you must contain it. Seal off the closet from the rest of the room with plastic sheeting. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves.

Mix a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part white vinegar. Lightly mist the mold patch to dampen it (this prevents spores from going airborne) and then gently scrub with a disposable cloth. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can react with the high mineral content in Dubai's water to release toxic fumes.

However, and this is a big however: because this is on an exterior wall, the real issue is likely hidden moisture intrusion, possibly from a tiny crack in the building envelope or inadequate insulation, which is extremely common here. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface and the problem will return. The health symptoms are a major red flag that professional assessment is needed.

For a proper, lasting solution that protects your family's health, you need a certified inspection to identify and fix the moisture source and then a professional remediation protocol. We strongly recommend you get a professional evaluation.
