How to stop closet mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah 3 has started to feel damp and my leather bags and shoes are getting tiny spots of mould. It’s the worst in the early morning, and even though the AC runs all the time, it doesn't seem to help the closet space. I’m worried my other clothes will get damaged. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity specifically inside a built-in closet?

Based in Jumeirah 3, you're experiencing a very common issue for villas in our coastal climate. The problem isn't just the high ambient humidity, but a lack of adequate air circulation within that built-in closet. Even with the AC running, closets are often dead-air spaces, especially if they are against an exterior wall that experiences thermal bridging.

The most effective immediate action is to mechanically introduce dry, conditioned air into the space. You can do this by installing a small, battery-operated duct fan into the closet door or interior wall, venting from the main air-conditioned room. This will actively circulate the dry air from your bedroom into the closet, preventing stagnation. For a simpler fix, leaving the closet doors open for several hours a day can help, but it's less effective.

Crucially, inspect the closet's rear wall. If it's an exterior wall, check for any hidden condensation or minor water ingress, which is a frequent culprit we find during inspections. The leather spots indicate active mould growth, which needs to be professionally hygienized to prevent spores from contaminating other items and to protect your health, as per Dubai Municipality's public health guidelines.

For a permanent solution and to protect your valuable belongings, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint condensation risks and hygrometers to measure the exact humidity level inside the cavity. Our team can design a targeted solution, which may include supplemental dehumidification or dedicated air sealing.

Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 to schedule an inspection. We can assess the situation and provide a definitive solution to stop the damage.
