How to test and purify air from new MDF cabinets?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been having persistent allergy-like symptoms – sneezing and itchy eyes – ever since we got the new MDF cabinets installed in our Jumeirah Park villa a couple of months ago. I keep reading about VOCs and off-gassing from these materials, and I'm getting worried. What's the most effective and truly eco-friendly way to test and then purify the air in their bedrooms to make it safer for them?

Good question. This is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in newer villas and with MDF furniture. The extreme heat and our reliance on closed AC systems actually trap and concentrate the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) like formaldehyde that are off-gassing from those new cabinets.
First, testing: For a truly accurate assessment, DIY home test kits aren't reliable enough, especially with kids involved. You need a professional indoor air quality (IAQ) inspection. We use photoionization detectors (PIDs) which provide real-time, precise readings of total VOC levels. This is crucial because it establishes a scientific baseline and identifies if the levels exceed the UAE's recommended exposure limits, which are often aligned with strict international standards like WELL or LEED. Now, for eco-friendly purification, standard air purifiers with HEPA filters only capture particles, not the gaseous VOCs. You need a two-pronged approach: 1. Source Removal & Sealing: The most effective step is to physically seal any unfinished edges or backs of the MDF cabinets with zero-VOC, non-toxic sealants. This dramatically reduces the emission point. 2. Advanced Air Purification: For the airborne VOCs, you need a purifier with a substantial activated carbon (charcoal) filter, not just a thin carbon pre-filter. The carbon must be of high quality and volume to adsorb the chemicals. Some units also use photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), a process that breaks down VOCs at a molecular level using UV light, which is highly effective. However, given the persistent symptoms in your children, I strongly recommend a professional assessment first. We can quantify the problem and then recommend the correct, most effective purification system specific to your villa's volume and conditions.
