How to treat and prevent black mold in wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe on the ground floor. The room has no windows and the AC vent is on the opposite wall, and everything just feels a bit damp. What's the best way to treat this safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back, like getting a dehumidifier or changing how we use the AC?

The black mold you've described in your Jumeirah villa's wardrobe is a common issue in Dubai, directly linked to our high humidity levels and the condensation cycles created by continuous AC use. The lack of ventilation and the location of the AC vent, which likely does not adequately circulate air into the enclosed space, creates a microclimate perfect for mold growth.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you may carefully clean it yourself using a solution of detergent and water, followed by a disinfectant like 70% isopropyl alcohol. It is critical to wear PPE: an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. However, given the persistent damp feeling, the visible growth is likely just the tip of the iceberg. Mold thrives behind baseboards, within walls, and on the back of furniture. Disturbing it improperly can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify hidden moisture sources and determine the spore count in the air. Remediation involves isolating the area with negative air pressure, HEPA vacuuming all surfaces, and using EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to treat the affected materials.

To prevent recurrence, address the humidity. Firstly, ensure your AC system is serviced and draining correctly. Consider installing a duct booster to improve airflow into the wardrobe. A dehumidifier is an excellent solution for a windowless room; maintain humidity levels below 60%. Also, avoid overfilling the wardrobe and leave space for air to circulate around your belongings.
