How to treat and prevent black mold on bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind my wardrobe in the master bedroom has started showing these black speckles, and the plaster feels a bit soft. We’ve lived in this Marina apartment for two years, but it only appeared after that really humid spell we had a couple of months ago. I’m worried it’s spreading inside the wall where I can’t see it. What’s the most effective way to treat this and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

Based on your description, that's classic black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger), and the soft plaster confirms moisture infiltration, which is a huge concern here in Dubai's high-humidity climate, especially after a humid spell. That wall cavity is absolutely a breeding ground you can't see.

First, do NOT disturb it. Bleach or DIY sprays are ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can aerosolize spores, making the contamination worse. For a proper treatment, the affected section of drywall needs to be carefully removed by a professional crew under containment to prevent cross-contamination. The wall cavity must then be HEPA-vacuumed, sanded, and treated with an EPA-approved antimicrobial coating before new plaster is applied. This isn't a surface clean; it's a remediation project.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the humidity source. A wardrobe against an exterior wall in Marina creates a cold spot with no air circulation, leading to condensation—this is the root cause. You need a dedicated dehumidifier, not a small portable one. For a bedroom, aim for a unit with a capacity of at least 20-30 liters per day and an auto-humidistat to maintain indoor RH below 50%, which is the critical threshold for mold growth. Place it in the room, not inside the wardrobe, and ensure you leave a gap between the wardrobe and the wall for air to circulate.

Given the structural moisture and potential for hidden growth, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to map the full extent behind the walls, which is crucial for an effective fix. This is a health and property integrity issue.
