How to treat and prevent closet mold in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall of our Jumeirah villa has started to get these black spots on the leather shoes and bags I stored there. It’s been so humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation is causing it. What’s the best way to treat the existing mold and what can I do to stop it from coming back in that specific spot?

Good question, and a very common issue we see here in Jumeirah, especially during the peak summer humidity. The combination of your villa's interior walls and a closed-off closet creates a perfect storm for mold growth due to condensation.

First, for treating the existing mold on your leather goods: Do not attempt to clean valuable items with household bleach, as it can damage the material. For leather, use a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% distilled water. Dampen a soft, clean cloth (do not soak it) and gently wipe the affected areas. Allow the items to dry completely in a well-ventilated, shaded area away from direct sunlight, which can crack the leather. This is a temporary measure; for expensive bags and shoes, I highly recommend consulting a professional leather restorer to prevent permanent damage.

Now, for preventing its return in that specific spot, you need to address the root cause: humidity and lack of air circulation.

1. Immediate Action: Thoroughly clean the closet interior with a detergent solution. Dry it completely. A small electric dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant dehumidifier bag (like those from DampRid) placed inside the closet is crucial.
2. Improve Airflow: This is non-negotiable. Leave the closet doors ajar whenever possible. If feasible, install louvered doors to allow for passive ventilation or a small, battery-operated vent fan.
3. Check for Insulation: The interior wall likely has a temperature difference causing condensation. A professional can use a thermal imaging camera to confirm this. The best long-term solution might be to improve the wall's insulation.
4. Monitor Humidity: Keep a hygrometer inside the closet. Your goal is to maintain humidity levels below 60%.

The pattern you describe suggests a persistent moisture issue. To ensure there's no hidden mold growth within the wall cavity itself and to get a definitive solution, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We can conduct moisture mapping and air quality tests to identify the exact source.
