How to treat mold in my Jumeirah apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to smell really damp, and I just found a few of my winter jackets have these black spots on the back wall. We had that really humid spell a couple of weeks ago and it seems to have gotten worse since then. What's the best way to treat this mold myself, and should I get one of those dehumidifier boxes everyone talks about for the closets?

Good morning. That damp smell and the black spots you're describing are classic indicators of active mold growth, likely caused by that recent high humidity we had, which is a massive trigger here in Dubai. The back wall of a closet is a prime spot because of restricted airflow, possibly a slightly cooler surface temperature from an external wall (common in Jumeirah apartments), and organic materials like your jackets providing a food source.

For a small, contained area like this, you can attempt a careful DIY clean. First, put on an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the moldy items in a plastic bag to be professionally cleaned or, if unsalvageable, discarded. For the wall surface, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated, non-bleach-based mold cleaner is effective. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots, and the moisture can actually feed the mold. Scrub the area gently, let it dry completely, and then monitor it.

A dehumidifier box or disposable moisture absorber is an excellent preventative measure for enclosed spaces like closets and is highly recommended in our coastal climate. However, it treats the symptom, not the cause.

Crucially, you need to identify the moisture source. In our region, it's rarely a leak but almost always condensation due to the high ambient humidity and temperature differentials (AC cycling). If the mold is more than a small, isolated patch (approx. 1 sq ft), has a persistent musty odor, or you see it returning after cleaning, this indicates a deeper issue.

For a definitive diagnosis and to ensure it's not a more problematic species, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We can perform moisture mapping and air quality tests to pinpoint the exact cause and recommend a permanent solution.
