How urgent is mold in my wardrobe to fix?« Back to Previous Page

My wardrobe in the master bedroom has developed a bunch of black spots on the back wall, and I’m sure it’s from the humidity. It’s been getting worse since the weather turned really humid a couple of months ago. I'm worried about my clothes and if this is something I need to drop everything to handle this weekend, or if it can wait until I get some supplies. How urgent is it to deal with this DIY, and what’s the first step I should take?

Good question. This is a very common issue in Dubai, especially with our extreme humidity levels. That black spotting is almost certainly mold, and you're right, it's from trapped, humid air in the confined wardrobe space.

In terms of urgency, I'd classify this as a moderate priority. It's not an emergency requiring evacuation, but you should address it within the next few days, definitely not weeks. The spores are active and will continue to spread to your clothing and the surrounding walls. The health risks from prolonged exposure, even in a small area, include allergic reactions and respiratory irritation, which you don't want.

Your first DIY step is crucial: DO NOT just wipe it or spray bleach. This can agitate the spores, aerosolizing them and spreading the problem. Your immediate action is to isolate the area. Remove all clothing and items from the wardrobe and inspect them thoroughly for spots. Wash any affected fabrics with a hot wash.

For the surface, a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water or a proprietary DIY mold remover can be used on non-porous surfaces. However, if that back wall is drywall or plaster, the mold may have penetrated beneath the surface, making DIY cleaning only a temporary fix. The root cause is the humidity. You must identify why it's trapping moisture—lack of ventilation, a cold bridge from an external wall, or an AC issue not dehumidifying properly.

For a proper assessment to ensure it's truly eradicated and to identify the moisture source, a professional inspection is always recommended. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find hidden problems you might miss. If the area is larger than a square foot, or if you see it returning after cleaning, definitely call us.
