Is AC dust or mold making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have had a constant runny nose and dry cough since we started using the AC full-time in our Jumeirah apartment a couple of months ago. I'm constantly dusting, but a fine layer of grey powder seems to settle on everything within a day, especially on the furniture directly under the vents. What is the **difference between** regular dust in the air and mold spores that could be growing inside the AC unit, and how can I tell which one is making them sick?

As a certified indoor environmental quality specialist here in Dubai, this is a very common issue we investigate, especially in older Jumeirah buildings. The key difference between the dust you're seeing and potential mold lies in the source and the health implications.
The grey powder accumulating under the vents is almost certainly a combination of standard dust (skin cells, fabric fibers, sand silt from outside) and, more critically, degraded particulate from the AC system itself. This includes dirt that bypassed the filter, fragments of fiberglass from deteriorating duct liner, and microbial dust from biofilm buildup on the cooling coils. Mold spores, however, are a biological contaminant. They are not always visible as a "layer" but can appear as fuzzy black, green, or white growth inside the unit, around the vents, or in the drip pan. The musty, earthy odor is a huge red flag for active mold. Both can cause the symptoms you describe—runny nose, persistent cough, and respiratory irritation. However, mold exposure can lead to more severe allergic reactions and toxic effects, especially in children. The constant AC use recirculates these pollutants, creating a problematic indoor air environment. Simple dust can often be managed with high-grade HEPA filtration and rigorous cleaning. But if you suspect mold or see that biofilm, a professional inspection is absolutely crucial. We use borescopes to look inside ductwork and take air samples to identify spore types and concentrations, which is the only way to know for sure what you're dealing with. Given your kids are symptomatic, I strongly recommend getting a professional assessment. You can call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. We'll identify the source and recommend the proper remediation, be it a deep duct cleaning or mold removal, to make your home safe again. |
