Is AC mold in Dubai causing my child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Park has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now my youngest has developed a really bad cough that gets worse at night. I just pulled the vent cover off and the inside is covered in black and greenish dust. Is this mold causing his asthma flare-ups, and what’s the fastest way to get our AC unit professionally cleaned and tested here in Dubai?

Based on what you've described, it is highly probable that the microbial growth in your AC unit is a primary trigger for your child's respiratory distress, including the worsening nocturnal cough. The damp smell indicates active fungal/bacterial growth within the ductwork or evaporator coil, a common issue in Dubai's climate due to high humidity and condensation inside AC systems. The black/greenish dust is likely a combination of mold (e.g., Cladosporium, Aspergillus) and other biological contaminants.

When the AC operates, it aerosolizes these spores and mycotoxins, distributing them throughout your living space. At night, the concentration can peak as the room is enclosed, leading to increased inhalation and exacerbated asthma symptoms like coughing and bronchial constriction. This is a serious indoor air quality concern.

The fastest and most effective course of action is to immediately cease using that AC unit and schedule a professional inspection and hygienization. DIY cleaning is insufficient and can disturb spores, making the situation worse. In the UAE, reputable companies like ours perform a comprehensive process: first, a detailed inspection and air/swap sampling to identify the contaminant types and concentration levels, then a full system clean using HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial coils cleaners, and ductwork sanitization. We provide a full lab report for your records.

For a situation involving a child's health, I strongly recommend you call for professional assessment immediately. You can reach our dedicated hotline at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an emergency inspection. Do not delay, as prolonged exposure will continue to affect his health.
