Is bedroom closet mold an emergency with a newborn?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It wasn't there during my last cleanup a few months ago, but with the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. My main worry is my newborn sleeping in the next room. Is this something I need to get my landlord to fix as an emergency, or is it okay to wait a few days for maintenance?

Yes, this is absolutely a situation that warrants immediate attention and should be treated as a priority, especially with a newborn in the home. As a specialist in the UAE, I can tell you that the recent spike in humidity is a primary catalyst for rapid mold growth like you're describing.

The presence of Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") is a serious concern. For an infant, whose immune and respiratory systems are still developing, exposure to mold spores can lead to health issues such as allergic reactions, coughing, wheezing, or more severe respiratory complications. The closet's location, sharing a wall with the nursery, means spores can easily migrate through air currents or the AC system.

Under UAE rental law (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are responsible for maintaining the property's structural integrity and ensuring it is habitable. A mold issue stemming from a potential underlying cause like a hidden pipe leak, faulty waterproofing, or inadequate insulation—all common in our climate—falls squarely under their obligation to rectify. You should notify your landlord in writing immediately, stating the issue and the presence of your newborn. This creates a formal record. While it may not be a "break-down-the-door" emergency, waiting days is not advisable due to the health risk and the fact the colony will continue to grow.

Do not attempt to clean it with bleach yourself. This often only bleaches the surface and fails to address the root moisture problem or remove the deeper mycotoxins, and improper disturbance can aerosolize spores.

Our strong recommendation is to get a professional inspection to identify the exact species and, crucially, the moisture source.
