Is black mold around my AC making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be related to the black spots I keep finding around the window frames in our villa in Jumeirah. It keeps coming back even after I wipe it away, especially after running the AC constantly during the summer. What’s the safest way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a very common issue we see in Dubai villas, especially in older properties in areas like Jumeirah. The black substance you're seeing is almost certainly mold, and yes, it can absolutely be the cause of your children's respiratory symptoms like coughing.
The constant AC use creates a perfect storm: the cold surface of the window frame and metal AC unit condenses moisture from Dubai's humid air. This dampness, combined with organic dust, provides an ideal food source for mold spores that are always present in the environment. Simply wiping it away doesn't address the root moisture problem or remove the microscopic roots (hyphae), so it will always return. For a small area, a safe DIY cleaning solution is a mix of white vinegar and water (50/50) or a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and scrub the area. However, this is a temporary fix. The key is controlling humidity. Ensure your AC is serviced regularly and set to a temperature that minimizes massive condensation, ideally between 22-24°C. Given that your children are already showing symptoms, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture and air sampling to identify the exact species of mold, as some types like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") are more toxigenic. Remediation then involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration, and applying UAE-approved biocides to ensure it's removed safely and permanently, in compliance with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
