Is black mold behind my wardrobe dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black speckled mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. Is this the dangerous black mold I need to panic about, or is this the more common type that I can handle myself with vinegar?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate attention, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms. The black, speckled mold behind your wardrobe is a classic sign of a humidity issue, extremely common here in Dubai due to our high ambient moisture levels and the use of AC, which can create condensation in poorly ventilated areas.
While the term "black mold" or Stachybotrys is often sensationalized, not all black-colored molds are that specific toxicogenic type. Many common molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger appear black and can still cause significant allergic reactions, coughing, and respiratory irritation, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing. You should NOT attempt to clean this yourself with vinegar. Vinegar is ineffective on many mold types and can actually aggravate the situation by disturbing the spores without proper containment, potentially spreading them throughout your bedroom and HVAC system. This increases your family's exposure. The persistent cough in your kids is a major red flag. UAE health and safety guidelines, particularly from the Dubai Municipality, strongly recommend professional assessment for mold in occupied residences to ensure the health of occupants. A certified inspector can conduct air and surface sampling to accurately identify the species and concentration, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol. For your family's safety, I strongly advise against a DIY approach. Please call our certified team for an immediate inspection.
